Identify dog breed on 1904 Trinidad 20-dollar note

While working on coverage of the private bank issues in Trinidad and Tobago, we came across this delightful vignette from the back of a Union Bank of Halifax 20-dollar note provisionally overprinted for Trinidad in 1904.

Post a comment below if you can correctly identify the breed of dog.

Bonus points for identifying the type of fish at which the dog is staring.

  1. My guess would be Cane corso for the dog breed and mackerel for the fishes.

Vashounet, Based upon comparisons to photos found online, I think mackerel is a good match, and logical since they are common along the coast of Nova Scotia, but I’m not sure about Cane corso for the dog. Just doesn’t look the same to me.
