According to an article on Colombia Reports dated 2 April 2012, the Banco de la República Colombia intended to replace the 1,000-peso (B986) note with a coin in October. However, according to a recent article in Colombia Reports, on 13 June 2012, the bank began issuing new coins in denominations of 50, 100, 200, 500 and 1,000 pesos, all featuring pictures of native animals. The bimetallic 1,000-peso (US$0.55) coin depicts a loggerhead sea turtle.
