Starting 1 January 2026, the Central Bank of Syria began exchanging preceding Assad-era notes for notes denominated in the new Syrian Arab Republic pound at a rate of 100:1, effectively removing two zeroes in an attempt to simplify economic life. Both currencies circulated in parallel for at least 90 days after the introduction of the corresponding new denomination, with an optional 30-day extension. The intial focus was the withdrawal of the three largest denominations.
