Canada new 5-dollar polymer note reported for introduction sometime after early 2027

On 16 December 2024, Canada announced that distance runner Terrance Stanley Fox (28 July 1958 – 28 June 1981) was will appear on the new 5-dollar banknote to honor his Marathon of Hope, a cancer research charity he founded after being diagnosed with the disease. Former Liberal prime minister Sir Wilfrid Laurier will be moved from the 5-dollar note to the next version of Canada’s 50-dollar note. The Bank of Canada is currently working on the 20-dollar note scheduled for early 2027, to be followed by the new 5-dollar note “sometime after that.” The bank has not yet begun designing the new 5- or 50-dollar notes, though we know the new 5-dollar note will be printed on polymer, predominantly in blue, with a vertical orientation.
