However, sometimes precise identifications remain elusive despite all the efforts of myself and various contributors. This frustrates me both as an author and a collector because it\u2019s my belief that if a country has chosen to feature something on one of its notes, it must have some particular historical or cultural significance and it deserves better than a generic description.<\/p>\n<p>So I\u2019m turning to the power of <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Crowdsourcing\" target=\"self\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">crowdsourcing<\/a> with The Challenge, an open call for help in identifying certain design elements which have heretofore defied identification.<\/p>\n<p>If you can precisely identify the proper name and location of any of the following\u2014or have a lead which you think might be useful\u2014please post a comment, preferably including a URL which links to evidence supporting your identification.<\/p>\n<p>Today\u2019s challenge is to identify the following items from Mali\u2019s banknotes.<\/p>\n<p>The building on the back of Mali\u2019s 5,000-franc note dated 1960 (P5 shown below, but it also appears on P10):<\/p>\n<p>IDENTIFIED: <a href=\"http:\/\/planetejeanjaures.free.fr\/geo\/afrique\/mali2.htm\" target=\"self\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Le March\u00e9 Rose (pink market) building in Bamako<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The dam on the front of Mail\u2019s 50-franc note dated 1960 (P6):<\/p>\n<p>IDENTIFIED: <a href=\"http:\/\/www.contourglobal.com\/mali.html\" target=\"self\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Markala dam on the Niger River<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The dam on the front of Mail\u2019s 1,000-franc note of 1970 (P13):<\/p>\n<p>IDENTIFIED: <a href=\"http:\/\/www.prem-online.org\/archive\/11\/doc\/niger%20lifeline%202.pdf\" target=\"self\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Sotuba dam hydropower plant on the Niger River<\/a>.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Today I\u2019m inaugurating a new feature on BanknoteNews.com: The Challenge.
